I was walking home from Hamra one night, around one am. I was alone, but I’d never had problems before. I was a few buildings past Captain’s Cabin when a guy started following me. I have no idea where he came from, the street was pretty deserted. He kept a close distance behind me but I ignored it. After a few seconds he started trying to talk to me. I have no idea what he said, but he was trying to ask me something, and so I crossed the street to get away from him, thinking he’d get the point. He instead followed me to the other side. I picked up my pace but he came right behind me and tried to grab me. I was so shocked and scared that I screamed, really loudly. The entire neighborhood probably heard me. He was shocked too when I did that, so shocked that he jumped like ten feet and when I looked he was in the middle of the street looking at me like I was insane. He started running. I was a bit shaken but mostly just confused when I started walking home again.
Then it got interesting.
After a few seconds I heard men’s voices yelling from up the street, and then I saw three guys sprinting down the street after the man. One of them came right up to me and started speaking to me in Arabic. When I told him I only spoke English he asked me, “Are you OK? Where are you going? Why are you alone?” and I though he was going to escort me all the way home. When we arrived at the small intersection with the green vegetable store, I saw a group of about six guys (where did they come from?!) had the stalker pinned on the ground against a car, he had his hands up and looked extremely nervous talking to them. One of the guys motioned to me, saying Faddali, but I really did not want to get near the scene. He then asked me, “What did he do? What did he do to you?!” I said he just tried to touch me and I got scared. I think they wanted me to stay and oversee the guy getting beat up or whatever, but I said an awkward “Thank You” and kept walking down the hill.
Last I saw, they had him pinned, stomach down, on the pavement with his hands behind his head. On one hand I was impressed with the reaction, it was incredible. On the other, I don’t want to rely on these guys sprinting out of nowhere to save me every time someone tries to put their hands on me. This guy though will think twice before he ever does that again.
