Harassed by an Employee at Liban Post… While Going About My Business!

i had one document to take from the post office jdeidet-matn, a document already late… What makes the service of liban post lack efficiency and credibility, I don’t know! Much time later, having wasted time trying to call their ‘customer care,’ I decided to visit the office itself asking where is my document and several times had no success… Workers there had no respect for the INFORMATION; they do not give me any information at all and they are bothered by my questions on my document !

i went up at the second floor where the manager told me i should find it, i had to sign it, so the man holding the notebook for my signature asks me questions weirdly… Many questions, like how much times did i travel before, what kind of work i do, if this is the first time i come to this office!

Now apparently i need to go to that post office more times so I can see or meet him more! It’s not enough for him to do his task but instead but he wants to enter my personal sphere! As i walk by him, he looked at me with that look in the his face telling me how useless i am for not responding to his questions : this kind of servitude, he means !!!! after that,i told the woman receptionist what kind of treatment just happened, she laughed. how long will people consider harassment a funny thing ?

Adventures of Salwa at the Pub –

“Be prepared… and be ready to scream! DON’T HOLD BACK!”

I was very young when this incident occurred… but I remember it as if it was yesterday. I was walking home from a sports club up the road just before the IC on bliss street. I always felt safe because the police station is 2 mins away, maghfar hbeich.

My cousin and I were two young teenagers, maybe 15 years old walking up the hill just before dark. Two men were walking towards us as if they were going to walk right past… very normal situation.

Just as they got close to us, one of them grabbed me by the arm and put his hand on my chest and felt and grabbed me then released me seconds later and continued walking as if nothing happened. My cousin was right next to me, but neither of us could speak a word, I couldn’t bring myself to shout, I was so scared.

My advice to anyone reading this is to be aware of what is around you, be prepared for such instances and be ready to scream… if I had uttered a sound, the police would have been there in seconds and this dirty man would never have hurt anyone else.

DON’T HOLD BACK, you have nothing to be ashamed of, they should be locked away so we can have a safe society to live in.

Any state that does not criminalize all forms of rape cannot be counted on

We, the women who reside in Lebanon, excuse ourselves from playing the decorative role that has been imposed on us.

We take to the streets today to say that we are aware and knowledgeable about the methodical war that state and society have waged on our bodies and our safety through their political parties and leaders.

From now on, we will not accept empty promises that are heaped upon us every time we call for our rights.

We will not give in to patience. We will not bite our wounds and postpone the battles of today to tomorrow.

Our voices will be louder than the bickering between your parties and your sporadic yet connected wars.

We call on Parliament to:

1. Pass the draft law for Protection from Domestic Violence as it has been written and with no delay.

2. Intensify punitive measures against rapists and those who attempt rape, amending the respective law.

3.Treat verbal harassment as physical harassment, especially in the work place, making it a crime subject to judicial penalties.

4. Deal with complaints related to sexual violence with rigor and consistency. We call on the Interior Ministry and the Municipalities to also apply those measures. The three bodies should work to make our streets and neighborhoods safe, especially during the night-time, by ensuring proper street-lighting, and permitting us to carry tools of self-defense, like taser guns and pepper spray.

We extend this invitation to all women and girls who have been exposed to rape or attempted rape or harassment in all its forms, to all so-called ‘housewives‘ that have been subjected to beating and verbal abuse, to all those employees, teachers, activists, workers and union leaders who experience sexual abuse time and time again, and to all those who feel the injustice and lack of equality.

We call on you to join us on the streets on the 14th of January 2012.

We begin the march at 12:00 PM from the Interior Ministry near the Sanayeh Garden, and move toward Parliament at Nejmeh Square.

We women no longer possess anything but solidarity with one another. We must stand shoulder to shoulder and unite. What lies before us is the last of our battles: the defense of our rights, bodies and security.

We have nothing to lose but our chains. The time is now.
